“Interviewers also need to be aware of The Primacy Effect, the first impression of another person that occurs within the first seven seconds of their meeting…These impressions may either be very insightful or very misleading, however, and most people are poor interpreters of them. It is something we do instinctively, and clothing and grooming play a large role…Our appearance will start the conversation long before any words are spoken.”
Excerpt: Chapter 1, Father
“Simply stated, God established His authority, love, and relationship with Adam from the beginning of time, leading to Adam's reciprocal response of love and respect. He also gave Eve to Adam as a love-gift and life partner. As we’ll see in more detail, interviewing is and always will be about relationships, whether or not we understand them that way.”
The First Interviewer
When the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” (Exodus 3:4)
Why would the Omniscient, Omnipotent God, The First Interviewer, use something like the art of interviewing to communicate with people? The answer is something I realized during my career as an ATF agent and continuous study of the Bible. While interviewing scores of victims, witnesses, suspects, and defendants, and as an interviewing and interrogation instructor, the insight and wisdom of the Scriptures became more clear. So, in these pages we’ll examine five Biblical narratives, illustrated with personal and professional interviews, in which I identify some of the same interviewing skills that I learned, practiced, and developed over a thirty-two-year career in law enforcement.
